Olumo rock is located in Abeokuta, Ogun state, Nigeria. It is always referred to as the bus stop of all Ogun state tour because any trip you take in this take without visiting the Olumo rock is absolutely incomplete.

This rock is located in the southern part of Abeokuta. Its name literally means “under the rock” and its name was taken out of its function, although its real meaning is “troubles and sufferings is over”.

HISTORY OF OLUMO ROCK                         

This rock has been existing for thousands of years and it is made up of granite. This rock served as fortress for the Egba people during the 19th century inter-tribal war. The Egba people hid in this rock to shield themselves from harm during this bloody war. The rock had undergone renovation in the year 2006.

The center contains a restaurant (sweet sensation), museum, water fountain and a market where awesome tie and dyes materials are being displayed. It is indeed a great tourism center.

FACTS ABOUT OLUMO ROCK

  • It stands at 137 meters above sea level.
  • Legends have it that no one has ever fallen off the rock because of the belief that it is protected by the gods.
  • Though it is fun to climb the stairs but it has an elevator that can take you to the uppermost part of the rock.
  • An Olumo festival is always held in March.
  • There is a tree in this place that its leaves never wither no matter the season and it’s used for medicinal purpose.
  • It has a spot at the top where pus and blood came out at the same time according to legends.
  • The rock contains small caves that the Egbas hid their wives and kids during the war.
  • These caves also contain holes which were dug by the people who hid there. It was used for grinding onions, peppers and food items.
  • You can get a good view of the Alake’s palace (royal king of Ogun), Ogun River, the old St. Peter cathedral (oldest church in Nigeria), the central mosque and other beautiful place of the city from the top of the rock.
